Spinalonga Island, Crete – Audio Guide

Spinalonga stands at the entrance of the Gulf of Elounda in eastern Crete, small in size but extraordinary in history. Over the centuries, the same island served as a Venetian fortress built against Ottoman expansion, a living Muslim settlement after 1715, and finally, from 1904 to 1957, a place of compulsory isolation for people with Hansen’s disease. • The architecture of survival: how the same buildings, a church, a cistern, a vaulted storeroom, changed function and meaning across three entirely different periods of history.
