Full access to the island. Walk the cobblestone paths at your own pace, the Venetian fortress, the Ottoman settlement, the cemetery, the ossuary. No fixed route, no rush.
Download our audio guide and let the island speak. Hear about Epaminondas Remoundakis, the law student who arrived at 21 and transformed a place of despair into a community with a cinema, a school, and a satirical newspaper. The priest who chose to stay. The musician who refused to leave.
Spinalonga, Crete
One island. Three completely different lives.
The Venetians built one of the Mediterranean's most powerful sea fortresses here. For 136 years it held against the Ottomans — even after the rest of Crete had fallen. The Michiel and Moceniga bastions, the Lion of Saint Mark, and the date 1579 carved in stone are waiting for you.
After the surrender of 1715, a thriving Ottoman settlement grew over the Venetian foundations and flourished in the 19th century. The two-storey houses and old merchant shops you see today are outstanding examples of Balkan vernacular architecture.
For 54 years Spinalonga housed up to 1,000 Hansen's disease patients. Out of despair rose a community of solidarity — a market, coffee houses, a theatre, even a cinema. The driving force: 21-year-old law student Epaminondas Remoundakis.
Your Audio Guide narrates every corner of the island in detail — Venetian fortifications, Ottoman houses, and the stories of the people who lived here.

Built in 1579, one of the most significant coastal fortifications in the Mediterranean.
Two-storey houses and old shops, built over Venetian foundations after 1715.
The homes, the church, the disinfection room where visitors had their hands cleaned with alcohol before leaving.
Concrete tombs still lie open, and the bones of over 400 patients remain visible inside a low stone tower.
Where patients prayed, attended mass, and held their weddings.
Recognised worldwide — for good reason
Spinalonga became known to millions of readers through Victoria Hislop's novel The Island (2005), one of the best-selling books in the UK for two decades running. The Greek TV series that followed in 2010 brought the story to a new generation.
But no book or screen can replace standing here yourself.

Best time of day: Arrive between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. to explore the fortress in peace. If you prefer photography, the late afternoon (after 4:00 p.m.) offers cooler air and beautiful soft light.
From Plaka: The closest departure point — just a 5-minute boat ride to the island. From Elounda: A popular and scenic option, with a 20-minute crossing. From Agios Nikolaos: Best for half-day excursions (4–6 hours), often including a BBQ lunch and a swim stop.
Sun protection is a must: Shade is extremely limited on the island — pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat. Wear the right footwear: The fortress terrain is steep and uneven. Comfortable, sturdy shoes are essential.
Spinalonga has been waiting since 1957.
