Spinalonga, Crete

Three Centuries of History

One island. Three completely different lives.

Venetian Era

The Impregnable Fortress

The Venetians built one of the Mediterranean's most powerful sea fortresses here. For 136 years it held against the Ottomans — even after the rest of Crete had fallen. The Michiel and Moceniga bastions, the Lion of Saint Mark, and the date 1579 carved in stone are waiting for you.

Ottoman Period

The Merchant Town

After the surrender of 1715, a thriving Ottoman settlement grew over the Venetian foundations and flourished in the 19th century. The two-storey houses and old merchant shops you see today are outstanding examples of Balkan vernacular architecture.

Leper Colony

The Island of the Living Dead

For 54 years Spinalonga housed up to 1,000 Hansen's disease patients. Out of despair rose a community of solidarity — a market, coffee houses, a theatre, even a cinema. The driving force: 21-year-old law student Epaminondas Remoundakis.

More than a monument. A community that refused to surrender. Between 1903 and 1957, Spinalonga was home to up to 1,000 people suffering from Hansen’s disease: men, women, and children sent here by force, often in handcuffs, with little hope of return. But they did not simply wait to die. They fell in love. They married in the church of Agios Panteleimon. They had children. They built cafés, a barbershop, a theatre, and a cinema. They published a satirical newspaper. They lit up their homes with electricity before the village across the water had any. When the cure was finally found in America in 1941  and reached Greece in 1948  the colony slowly emptied. The last patients left in 1957. The priest who had chosen to live among them stayed two more years, tending the graves of those who never made it out. Today, the island is silent. The bones are still there. So are the stories.

What awaits you in Spinalonga

The Tunnel Entrance

Walk through the 20-metre passage that greeted every new arrival. The inscription above once read: "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here."

The Venetian Fortress

Built in 1579, one of the most significant coastal fortifications in the Mediterranean.

The Ottoman Settlement

Two-storey houses and old shops, built over Venetian foundations after 1715.

The Leper Colony

The homes, the church, the disinfection room where visitors had their hands cleaned with alcohol before leaving.

The Cemetery & Ossuary

Concrete tombs still lie open, and the bones of over 400 patients remain visible inside a low stone tower.

The Church of Agios Panteleimon

Where patients prayed, attended mass, and held their weddings.

Spinalonga became known to millions of readers through Victoria Hislop's novel The Island (2005), one of the best-selling books in the UK for two decades running. The Greek TV series that followed in 2010 brought the story to a new generation.
